Guide to Tenants’ & Landlords’ Rights

If you’re a renter or landlord with questions, the best resource is the free booklet, California Tenants - A Guide to Residential Tenants' and Landlords' Rights and Responsibilities. It’s on the California Department of Consumer Affairs website.

It doesn’t matter if you are renting a room, apartment, house or a duplex, there are federal, state and local laws governing your rights and responsibilities. Even though the booklet is written from the tenant’s point-of-view, landlords will be able to take advantage of the valuable information to hopefully avoid problems and resolve disputes that do occur.

You can also order free copies of this highly informative booklet by calling the Department of Consumer Affairs Publication Hotline at (866) 320 8685 or (800) 952 5210. It is also available in Spanish.
