100 Youths Planting Trees for the Youth Beautification Project
The Long Beach Housing Development Company partnered with Wrigley Going Green, a local nonprofit environmental group, on a project called "Youth Beautification Project 2009." The project’s objective was to educate the youth residing in Long Beach’s affordable housing developments and other youth organizations about the values of teamwork, discipline and pride in their community. This was done by doing neighborhood clean-ups, attending an environmental workshop, and planting trees along the Anaheim Corridor. The project involved the youth planning and organizing cleanups within their own neighborhoods. Individual youth groups from the different developments then combined as a team and attended an environmental workshop. To complete the beautification project, the groups planted trees along the Anaheim Corridor on May 2, 2009, in honor of Arbor Day. All participating youth had the opportunity to earn a $100 stipend for completing all the planned activities.
